Art is a Science

July 8th, 2008

When I was in college I read a book that changed my life. The title “Advice from a Failure”. I don’t have the book anymore so I can not name the author The advice was turn your brain off. Stop thinking and be receptive to the world around you. The author was shy person like me and the advice made good since. Shy people, when they meet someone new are always thinking. Will they like me? Does my hair look ok? What will I say if I have to speak first?

The mind is so cluttered with your thoughts that the other person assumes you don’t care or off in the clouds somewhere. A great tool for meeting somebody new is to use your creative mind instead of your thinking mind. To do this just sing a random tune song in your brain, like do da do da do do. This is what I mean about turning your brain off. Stop your thinking.

We all have three parts to our brain. The left brain - logic and the right brian emotions and creativity. But we also have a third major part, the robot or motor functions. When I was in high school my drivers training included a test of my reaction time to get my foot off the accelerator and onto the brake. Every bodies time was about a half a second. If you do the math the car travels 60 feet in that half second.

So how do we play the piano or the guitar with these slow reaction times? How do we read the note with our eyes and get our fingers to move so fast. It’s a no brainer. Motor neurons don’t need a thinking brain to react. So in all the arts you have to turn your brain off and let the robot do the work, I have an art course in witch I teach pencil drawings to kids here in the Philippines. The course last for 60 seconds and consist of: Turn your brian off. Move pencil, hand, arm and body to fast non thinking strokes. Use the connection between your right brian and your robot brain to develop your art talents.

Now we want to know what we can do if we exploit the connections between the right brian and the left brain, I call this “Idea Generation or Intuition”. I do this by thinking of a word, then quickly turn my brian off and see what pops into my head. We are trying to create the Eureka Factor or the light comes on with a new idea. So you can see that the brain off, brain on is a very useful tool in the fiels of science and art. So is art a science? Your comment below are much appreciated.

I still have one problem with my theory of “Art is a Science”. A lot of the population has never turned on their brain in their life. All they know is right brain and do not think, How do I teach them reason and logic? This divides the world into two parts. The talkers and the thinkers. This now gives me a much better view of myself. I don’t like the word shy, I like the word thinker much better.

We have two web site on the Internet. For art and creativity I have http://www.cast-cebu.org. This site is dedicated to 3d animation and movie making. For my reason and logic I have http://www,tetracebu.com. This site is full of Java application and computer programming. We like you to try some of our web applications.

To upload cartoons and picture with a funny caption go to: http://www.tetracebu.com/cartoons.

To find out how intuitive you are go to our “Idea Generator” at http://www,tetracebu.com/ideas

Teach met to turn on my brain
and use my left, right, robot brian fusion.
I do not want my thinking to wane
and fall into the mire of confusion.

Teach me to turn off my brian
and exploit my artistic talents.
The right brian keeps me sane
and I must keep a good balance.

The Dog Theory of Marketing

June 26th, 2008

I’ve told this story in another blog, but the dogs in my life has been a very important part of my growing up. Ted the dog of my early youth was always there looking up at you, with those big eyes, that ask the question; What do you want me to do? The dog never jump on you. This is part of the wien process it learned from its mother.

So the Dog theory is very simple. All you have to do is figure out who is the master and who is the dog. The master is the one with the money in his pocket and wants to spend this for a good product and good services. The dog is the provider of the service or product. So the master is the customer and the seller is the dog. The seller is the one who has todo the trick.

This brings up the question; What type of dog do we need to be? The type that jumps on you and treats you as its mother or the one that forms a pack. Well according to my father the best dogs are the ones that are ready to form a pack and has been wiened from their mother. Taking this to the customer, sales relationship, it is easy to see that the sales department must form a pack with its customer. The sales department is the dog and must do rhe trick.

In the United States, the pack between the customer and waiter or waitress is the tip the customer leaves as a reward for good service. The waiter or waitress is paid a salary below minium wage and is very dependent on tips to make a living wage. This ensures that the service provider forms a pack with the customer and is willing to do the trick and earn o good tip from the customer.

I now tell the story of a local Cebuano girl that married an American and moved to a small town in Oregon. The girl was very pleasurable to talk to, had a great attatude and very friendly. In the small town the only jobs available is a waitress in a small resturent. She learned how to be the dog and service the customers needs. Well the outcome of this is that she made more tips than anyone else, made the resturant owner happy and brought in new customers.

This brings up the next question; Should I as the master deal with an agent or a salesman? You as the master give up your position as the master and give that responsability to the agent. You have to be very careful in these situations because the agent my double dip you. He collects from both you and the seller.

You run into this type of situation in all of the retail stores here in the Philippines. The stores do not buy and sell merchandise. The sell space. A vendor rents space from the store, stocks the space and provides an attendant watch over it. You the customer is dealing with an agent who gets a sales commission on the products sold. What does that make the customer? It makes him the victim of the master, the store owner.

I was just recently at a mall called JY Square. It was raining out side and I had no umbrella with me. I needed a place to sit down for an hour so I could wait out the rain. There is no public places to sit down at this mall. I set on the steps between two parts of the mall. There were five steps each able to accommodate 10 people across.

Well I had only sit there a few minutes when this cleaning attendant came up to me and said; “Sir, Sir, you are not allowed to sit on these steps, would you move elsewhere.” The whole mall must have had 20 customers in the whole place. A real sad affair when just the week before a major tenant moved out. You would think that all malls must be customer friendly welcome the masters waving their money at the dogs(the mall owners).

Another example here in the Philippines is the service you get at the local resturants and bars. To get service you have to raise your hand, hiss, get down on your knees and beg to get someone to pay attention to you. Some how when they walk by they just ignore you. This is part of the hierarchy of command. You as a lowly service worker are not to disturb the master unless spoken to. But you can see the conflict here with the Dog Theory of marketing. The master is the one who has to beg.

The Solution to Corruption

June 2nd, 2008

We now form a conclusion on how to cure corruption in the Philippines. We want to combine thr “The Dream”,, “The Dog and the Cat” and “Philippine Corruption” into a unified solution. Of course this is a male, dualistic, protestant, dog and paternal solution. The things that influent my culture and thinking.

I choose the dog because it is a pack animal and marks it tearratory boundary. The cat is just to self centered has no sense of taking care of the world around it.

I choose dualistic because we need a large this world view. We need to have an informed public view and a attitude that we can change things. It is our concern to make a better lift for the next generation.

I choose the protestant point of addressing my relationship with the creator and my fellow man. I choose to address all my relationships as equals.  This also applies to the structure of national government and business.

I choose a marriage that is paternalistic. A male dominated pack but still flat hierarchy where all have a voice. A constructive critesicem form of management.

I choose a male way of thinking. Be logical and fare to all parties. Any emotions expressed is losing hand in the game of life.

Now let me support my arguments. I will do this by telling my real life stories of living in the Philippines.

We address the hierarchy argument with the story of trying to buy a pair of men’s briefs, or any thing for that matter, at a local department store. All stores here in the Philippines is organized by vendor. A vendor rents space from the store owner and parks a sales person to watch over this space. I go to buy a pair of men’s briefs and there are six brands, six displays and six girls ready to help you. Which one do you choose? The sales ladies are all aggressive to sell you their brand. They get a sales commission on the sale. So who is the customer here? Not me. I’m just the victim. The vendor is the customer.

“A hierarchy leads to personal goals which lead to corruption,” Bertrand Russell

I choose to work with the dogs. I have already told the story “The Dog and the Cat” which supports this view. A dog is always ready to help you. It is a team player.

I choose dualistic view of this world. I think I learned this view from my parents and high school athletic coach. We were a team working together for a common goal. My Dad and I are loading hay onto a wagon, I’m in front using feet to arrange and compact the hay. My Dad is at the hay loader with a fork spreading it around the wagon, My Dad says, “Let’s change jobs. A change is as good as a rest.” We worked as a team.

Organized team sports was an important part of my high school education. The locale schools all had teams in football and basketball with a full time coach and teacher. These teams played other schools in the district. At the end of the season, a state tournament was held to crown the state champion. I was a guard on our high school basketball team and my coach was always telling me to look for the open man and never telegraph your pass. I developed a no look left or right hand hook pass that was very effective for the open man to score points. I did not score, but I got many assist.

Team sports are a great lesson for life and for business ventures. Work as a team. Use the corner of your eye to view the action. Never tell all you know. Learn to lead. Learn to follow. In the world of business competion teams sports in high school is a great teaching tool.

Here in the Philippines your physical education is to learn to dance to music. This teaches everybody to do the same thing. Be like everyone else. A very non-dualistic type of thinking.

Ok. Here is the solution, Dog, Paternal, Dualistic, Protestant and Team. Hey! that sounds a lot like me and the things I was taught when growing up in a small rural town in the snow belt in the U.S. Here a bright idea. Just elect me president of the Philippines. All the Philippine corruption problems would be solved.

Well, let’s think about that again. I’m a foreigner and I could never be the president of the Philippines. So what’s our next option? How do we make it snow in the Philippines?

Teach me to be a Protestant
and revolt against the hierarchy.
In the game of life, I am a contestant
and the dog must barkarchy.

Teach me to think dualistic
and care about the things of this world.
My world view is futuristic
For a better Philippine flag unfurled.

Teach me to be the dog
so I can do the trick.
Get my mind out of the fog
and turn me into a burning wick.

Teach me to be paternal
and have the skills to slay the dragon.
I still want to be maternal
and drive the family wagon.

The Dog and the Cat

May 15th, 2008

This is a story I recall from my growing up on a diary farm. We always had a dog and and several cats as part of the group of animals. I can remember the first dog when I was a toddler to about age of seven or eight. His name was Ted and was a wedding present to my Mother and Father.

Ted could do many tricks like speak twice, roll over, fetch, catch a ball, play dead and others. We always had fun together because Ted could play baseball. He was the fielder and chased every ball I hit. You could point to the ground and say sic-em and he would dig a hole in the dirt.

Why do I tell this story? Ted was a great dog and companion to us kids, but the greatest lesson I learned came from my Father. He ask me the question, while Ted was looking for his food dish. “Do you know what makes a good dog like Ted?” The answer he told me was to select the dog from a litter of puppies after they have been weaned from their mother. The new dogs are now ready to to form a pack with other dogs and work together to survive and hunt for food.

At this stage the dog forms a pack with you. You are the alpha male and the dog is there to help you accomplish the task under your leadership. Now to accomplish this transformation there must be one master and and your time. Multiple people on the training area is a distraction and does not work. The time is one on one with no distractions.

Ok! Now the point of this story. In previous post we have discussed the culture of the East and the Philippines as being non-dualistic. The culture of the West is dualistic. How do I see the connection between dogs and East - West culture? In the Western culture an individual is encourage to leave the family nest and strike out on his or her dream. The dream is planted by the parents and nurtured in a school environment. The Eastern culture encourages a child to keep the family together.

“Every successful man (Dog) leaves his mother.”

I do live with a cat in my old age. It has been shown that a cat can reduce stress and make life more enjoyable. So how do you pick a good cat. Cats are not a pack animal so you pick a cat before it has been weaned from its mother. This make you it mother and it will jump up on your lap or rub against your leg.

We had many cats when I lived on the farm. The cats were there to catch and chase rats and mice. All these cats were wild and you could only get close to them at feeding time (they got milk twice a day from the milk cows).

When I was in the third grade my dad let me bring a cat home from a classmate at school. My Mother let me keep it in the house as a house pet. All this cat did was eat and sleep, Oh yes it chases a string. The cat never formed a pack and never did any thing useful except to attack anything that moved.

So what culture is better, the dog or the cat? I don’t think its a dog or cat question but a wean and form a pack question. To survive us humans need to form a pack or team. This is a fast and chaotic world;

The Dream

May 2nd, 2008

An important term used to describe the Philippine Culture is non-dualistic. The western way of think can be called dualistic. Dualistic is the thinking process where you have two points of looking at the world. A dualistic person sees the world as himself and the world outside the self. A non-dualistic person sees the world as him self and the world that only he is interested in.

An example of non-dualistic person thinks of property as his home, his relatives homes, his places he visit and the places where he worship. A dualistic person has his home and all the world outside his home. Time can be split in the same way. A non-dualistic person looks at the present time, where I am now, and the times in my life that are important to him. If I’m dualistic my time is linear from from time 0 to the present and to the future.

The western view is that there is me and I’m part of the whole. The eastern philosophy is there is me and the things that interest me. I am not responsible for the things out side my interest. So how do we get a non-dualistic person to think of the future in this world? What is the future? It’s a dream.

I have lived in the Philippines for over 14 years and the thing I see the most here is that there is no public sector in government. In my civic classes in school we learned that there are three parts to a good government, The Private Interest, The Public Interest and The Government. Using the definition for non-dualistic we can see why there is no public interest in the minds of most Filipino.

How can we grow, in the Filipino mind, a strong concern for the public sector? The public view is the check and balance need to keep the private and government power structure in balance. We do this with a dream, The Philippine Dream. The dream needs to be of this world, where we are now and how to get to the next step in the dream. What is this dream. A conviction that the Philippines can do it and be competitive in the world.

Teach me good government
and the importance of a public view.
Make me a covenment
so I have a voice with the chosen few.

If we plant the dream then it will grow. The dream that the Philippines can do it.

Why am I so dumb?

March 1st, 2008

On Saterday Febuary 16, 2008, I was walking to the coffee shop and I was about 100 meters behind the maid of my landlady. She has a interesting walk an a get view from behind. A motorcycle is comming from the opposite direction. It stops, They talk for a few minutes, She gets on and they make a U turn and motor the maids appointed errand. I wonder why nobody looks at me and offers to share.

The next day Sunday, I was attending the birthday party of a one year old girl that was born on valentines day. I was going home and I had to walk about 2 kilometers to get to the main road. It was raining and so I got wet. About halfway I passed a girl that had an umbrella. As I passed see said “Exsquse me Sir”. See said it again and as I turn to her she said : It’s raining and You are getting wet. Would like to share my umbrella?” Not thinklng and just being stupid I said “No thanks it’s just water and I don’t mine.”
