The Solution to Corruption

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

We now form a conclusion on how to cure corruption in the Philippines. We want to combine thr “The Dream”,, “The Dog and the Cat” and “Philippine Corruption” into a unified solution. Of course this is a male, dualistic, protestant, dog and paternal solution. The things that influent my culture and thinking.

I choose the dog because it is a pack animal and marks it tearratory boundary. The cat is just to self centered has no sense of taking care of the world around it.

I choose dualistic because we need a large this world view. We need to have an informed public view and a attitude that we can change things. It is our concern to make a better lift for the next generation.

I choose the protestant point of addressing my relationship with the creator and my fellow man. I choose to address all my relationships as equals.  This also applies to the structure of national government and business.

I choose a marriage that is paternalistic. A male dominated pack but still flat hierarchy where all have a voice. A constructive critesicem form of management.

I choose a male way of thinking. Be logical and fare to all parties. Any emotions expressed is losing hand in the game of life.

Now let me support my arguments. I will do this by telling my real life stories of living in the Philippines.

We address the hierarchy argument with the story of trying to buy a pair of men’s briefs, or any thing for that matter, at a local department store. All stores here in the Philippines is organized by vendor. A vendor rents space from the store owner and parks a sales person to watch over this space. I go to buy a pair of men’s briefs and there are six brands, six displays and six girls ready to help you. Which one do you choose? The sales ladies are all aggressive to sell you their brand. They get a sales commission on the sale. So who is the customer here? Not me. I’m just the victim. The vendor is the customer.

“A hierarchy leads to personal goals which lead to corruption,” Bertrand Russell

I choose to work with the dogs. I have already told the story “The Dog and the Cat” which supports this view. A dog is always ready to help you. It is a team player.

I choose dualistic view of this world. I think I learned this view from my parents and high school athletic coach. We were a team working together for a common goal. My Dad and I are loading hay onto a wagon, I’m in front using feet to arrange and compact the hay. My Dad is at the hay loader with a fork spreading it around the wagon, My Dad says, “Let’s change jobs. A change is as good as a rest.” We worked as a team.

Organized team sports was an important part of my high school education. The locale schools all had teams in football and basketball with a full time coach and teacher. These teams played other schools in the district. At the end of the season, a state tournament was held to crown the state champion. I was a guard on our high school basketball team and my coach was always telling me to look for the open man and never telegraph your pass. I developed a no look left or right hand hook pass that was very effective for the open man to score points. I did not score, but I got many assist.

Team sports are a great lesson for life and for business ventures. Work as a team. Use the corner of your eye to view the action. Never tell all you know. Learn to lead. Learn to follow. In the world of business competion teams sports in high school is a great teaching tool.

Here in the Philippines your physical education is to learn to dance to music. This teaches everybody to do the same thing. Be like everyone else. A very non-dualistic type of thinking.

Ok. Here is the solution, Dog, Paternal, Dualistic, Protestant and Team. Hey! that sounds a lot like me and the things I was taught when growing up in a small rural town in the snow belt in the U.S. Here a bright idea. Just elect me president of the Philippines. All the Philippine corruption problems would be solved.

Well, let’s think about that again. I’m a foreigner and I could never be the president of the Philippines. So what’s our next option? How do we make it snow in the Philippines?

Teach me to be a Protestant
and revolt against the hierarchy.
In the game of life, I am a contestant
and the dog must barkarchy.

Teach me to think dualistic
and care about the things of this world.
My world view is futuristic
For a better Philippine flag unfurled.

Teach me to be the dog
so I can do the trick.
Get my mind out of the fog
and turn me into a burning wick.

Teach me to be paternal
and have the skills to slay the dragon.
I still want to be maternal
and drive the family wagon.

The Dream

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

An important term used to describe the Philippine Culture is non-dualistic. The western way of think can be called dualistic. Dualistic is the thinking process where you have two points of looking at the world. A dualistic person sees the world as himself and the world outside the self. A non-dualistic person sees the world as him self and the world that only he is interested in.

An example of non-dualistic person thinks of property as his home, his relatives homes, his places he visit and the places where he worship. A dualistic person has his home and all the world outside his home. Time can be split in the same way. A non-dualistic person looks at the present time, where I am now, and the times in my life that are important to him. If I’m dualistic my time is linear from from time 0 to the present and to the future.

The western view is that there is me and I’m part of the whole. The eastern philosophy is there is me and the things that interest me. I am not responsible for the things out side my interest. So how do we get a non-dualistic person to think of the future in this world? What is the future? It’s a dream.

I have lived in the Philippines for over 14 years and the thing I see the most here is that there is no public sector in government. In my civic classes in school we learned that there are three parts to a good government, The Private Interest, The Public Interest and The Government. Using the definition for non-dualistic we can see why there is no public interest in the minds of most Filipino.

How can we grow, in the Filipino mind, a strong concern for the public sector? The public view is the check and balance need to keep the private and government power structure in balance. We do this with a dream, The Philippine Dream. The dream needs to be of this world, where we are now and how to get to the next step in the dream. What is this dream. A conviction that the Philippines can do it and be competitive in the world.

Teach me good government
and the importance of a public view.
Make me a covenant
so I have a voice with the chosen few.

If we plant the dream then it will grow. The dream that the Philippines can do it.
