(74 words) The history of Cebu starts with the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan on April 21, 1521 over 480 years ago. The Portuguese captain, sailing the flag of Spain, was searching for the Spice Islands. His goal was to sail west and show that the Spice Island belonged to Spain. After much hardship and a long journey he landed in the Philippines. In Cebu he discovered a very active community “Sugbu” trading with it's Asian neighbors.
30 words) This is the former Cebu Custom House. It is now the “Malacanyan sa Sugbu” or the official Cebu residents and office of the President of the Philippines.

(24 words) Magellan's Cross is “the” major force of being for the city of Cebu. It is the cities logo and anchor point of its heritage.
(30 words) Pictures painted on the ceiling depict Magellan planting the cross and the first Christian baptism in Asia. Magellan's Cross is a monument to the birth of Christianity in the Philippines. In 1835, the cross was enclosed in a hollow wooden casing to protect it from harm.
(37 words) From time immortal this spot has been set aside to commemorate the erection of the cross in Cebu. Ferdinand Magellan raised a wooden cross in 1521 and Baptized King Hoo-mob-on , Queen Hoo-a-na and 400 of their subjects.
(64 words) Cebu historians doubt if this indeed is the original cross planted by Magellan. Native Cebuano rose up against the Spaniards,, 17 days after the cross was planted.
Magellan attempted to solve a dispute between Rajah Humobon and the chief LapuLapu of the nearby Mactan Island. This “Battle of Mactan” resulted in the death of Magellan and the exit of the Spanish expedition form Cebu.

(23 words) Retracing our steps, we are back at Malacanyang de Subug and pier 1. In the background is Plaza In-de-pen-den-cia and Fort San Pedro.
(48 words) Miguel Lopez de Legazpi arrived in Cebu 44 years after Magellan. His expedition arrived from Mexico and its goal was to establish the rule of Spain over Cebu. Legazpi laid out the plans for a triangular fort in 1565. This was built to protect the emerging Spanish settlement.
(35 words) Fort San Pedro is the smallest and the oldest tri-bastion fort in the Philippines. This triangular fort was first constructed with logs and earth. Many years later it was permanently constructed from coral blocks.
(34 Words) The fort is open for tourist seven days a week, There is a small entrance fee. Today the fort is maintained by the Cebu Garden Club. Its inner court is a beautiful miniature garden.
(34 words) Fort San Pedro is part of the Philippine National Museum. The museum showcases the story of the San Diego shipwreck in the deep waters of the Philippine sea. The ship was sunk by cannon fire in the year 1600.
(110 words) In late October 1600 the trading ship San Antonio was armed with cannons and renamed the San Diego. On December 1, 1600 it was ordered to pursue the foreign vessel that entered Philippine waters. The San Diego was sunk in the battle with much of its commercial cargo on board. Some artifacts on display includes Ming porcelain pieces of all sizes, coins and jewelry.
The battle side of the San Diego includes swords fragments, cannons, cannon balls and helmets.
Other artifacts in the museum are vintage photographs of Cebu and copies of plans of the fort and the archaeological story of recovering the treasures from the wreck of the San Diego.(20 words) The roof of the museum is an observation platform. (17 words) Adjacent to the historical Fort San Pedro, is Plaza Inde-pen-den-cia, formerly called “Plaza Lib-er-tad or Freedom Square”.
(33 words) Not to much is know of the early history of the park. Before Magellan it may have been a burial ground. In Legaspi's time it may have been part of the Spanish community.

Colon street is part of the Parian District, settled by the Spaniards when they arrived in Cebu in 1565. A monument, erected by the Women's International League, commemorates the history and ongoing historic restoration of this part of Cebu.

(49 words) The Heritage of Cebu Monument is located on the original Plaza Parian, this monument showcases the significant and symbolic events in the history of Cebu. This great masterpiece is the work of national artist Edgardo Castrillo. Construction began in July 1997 and was finished and dedicated in December 2000.
(126 words) The inscription on the monument reads: The pride, unity and cultural wealth of a race, emulate from the peoples since of self and their history; from the early Filipinos, to the dawn of European colonization, the resolution of 1896, the birth of the Philippine Republic, the heroic contribution of the Cebuano people and the saga of events which transpired on the island of Cebu are vital elements in the formation of the nation we know today.
There contribution should rightfully be emanated, amortized and honored in a lasting, memorial, and aesthetic experience.
This work of art “Parian Park” is the loving legacy of the City and Province of Cebu. This monumental sculpture tableau is an honor to the people of Cebu and is a tribute to all Filippo people and the wealth of our race.

(52 words) The Basilica de la Santo Niño is one of the oldest churches in the Philippines. It was built by an Augustinian priest in 1565 and was built on the site where the Santo Niño was found. Fire and other natural calamities has caused several reconstructions. The present church was constructed in 1735.

(33 words) The Pilgrim Center is used for celebrating Holy Mass outdoors. It has an altar at the center and bleachers on two sides This outdoor church can accommodate more people than the church inside.
(75 words) The “Cebu Sinulog festival” is celebrated in honor of the patron saint of Cebu the Santo Niño, or the child Jesus. It is a week long event starting the second week in January. The “Grand Parade is on the third Sunday of January. It is a showcase of the sinulog dance and beat.
During the annual festival, the Pilgrim Center turns into a dancing hall after the solemn mass. with all the devotees dancing the sinulog.

(43 words) On the left is the Southwestern University Museum on Or-hel-yo Street. It is the collection and treasures of Dr. Lydia Aznar-Alfonso, a founder of the University.
Inside are rare early editions of Philippine books. art peaces, pottery. burial coffins and religious icons.(52 words) On the right is Cebu Normal University. It was the headquarters of the Japanese Imperial Army during World War Two. The Cebu Normal Museum contains artifacts from this occupation of the school.
Also on display are old farming tools, old cloths, old teaching tools and a collection of animals and skeletons.(105 words) On the left is Abellana National School. It is the home of the Cebu Sports Complex.
It facilities are: an Olympic size swimming pool, A second pool for the younger kids, an Olympic rubberized oval running track and soccer field. The grandstand can accommodate 15,000 people.
In the second week in January, it is the site for the annual Cebu Sinulog Festival. A celebration of the Santo Niño, the child Jesus.
The Sinulog is a dance dating back to before Magellan.
On the third Sunday in January, a street parade and stage performance is an all day event at the sport complex.

(45 words) On the left is the CAP Arts Center It is personal memorabilia of Don Sergio Osmeña Sr., the grand gentleman of Philippine politics. The museum contains furniture, cloths, photos, an old car and communication equipment. The exhibit is a reflection of the 1940s and 50s.
(80 words) Fuente Osmeña or Circle Osmeña is named after President Ser_eeo Osmeña. This circular intersect joins the major east-west roads to Osmeña Boulevard.
It is the geographic center of Cebu and is a circular park with a magnificent fountain at the center. The fountain is one of city's most famous landmarks dominating the uptown area.
The Park with it's trees and benches provide a great place to relax. On the outer circle are shopping malls, restaurants, hotels and casinos.(14 words) A beautiful gigantic Christmas tree stands tall in the months of November, December and January.

The view from Osmeña Boulevard presents a very memorable image. The scenic mountains in the background and the classic Roman and Greek statues contribute to the sedate beauty of the structure. It is the most beautiful provincial capitol in the Philippines. Approaching the capitol you are greeted by the waving Philippine flag, the main three door entrance and the dome with the inscription:(11 words) The authority of government emanates from the people.
